Sensory Art

This week I lead some sensory art sessions at a camp.  It is nice when I get to combine art and occupational therapy together.  I thought I would share some of the recipes with you for sensory art experiences.  I figured this still goes with the get outside and get creative theme since a lot of this you might want to do outside since it is messy!

Puffy Paint-I have been wanting to try this for a long time and it is so much fun.  Combine equal amounts of white glue and shaving foam.  Stir together and add food coloring.  Paint it on thick so it is puffy.  We did icing on pretend muffins since we were inspired by the book If you give a moose a muffin.  You can put it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds so it puffs up more and dries faster.

Gluten Free Play Dough-This recipe works really well and is a nice change from the traditional recipe.  My kids are 8 and 10 and it surprised me that they still loved playing with play dough! Place 3/4 of a cup of water in a sauce pan and add in a few drops of food coloring.  Next pour in 1 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup corn starch.  Heat and stir until it starts to boil.  Place onto  parchment paper and once it starts to cool you can mold it into a nice lump of play dough.

Slime-I am sure most of you have had their house taken over by slime already but here is our recipe just in case you haven’t entered the slime world yet!  Pour white or clear glue into a bowl. Add in a few drops of food coloring and any other things you want like glitter, foam balls, and scents.  Slowly add liquid detergent until the mixture isn’t sticky anymore.  We have tried cheaper detergents but we find that liquid Tide (the natural one) works the best.   My kids then use their hands to move the slime around until it is a good consistency and add in more detergent if it is still sticky.

Have fun with these sensory recipes.  It is great for kids to have experiences getting messy and feeling different textures.  Set it up outside on the deck or put a big tarp or drop sheet on the grass and go for it.
